Understanding Stone and Crystal Gems

products

Most, if not all, jewelry lovers love gemstones, too. And why not? Whether they’re made of rocks or crystals of a certain mineral, gemstones are always a pleasure to the eye. And they bring a sense of pride to those who wear them, especially women. Some people also wear gems for the astrological value they hold. It is said that some gems can attract money, love, fame or happiness. Because there is no scientific proof behind this claim, they can still be worn for their sheer colorfulness which looks even prettier on gold, silver or any other precious metal. Indeed, humans have always been fascinated by these gems and there’s nothing they won’t do to preserve these natural beauties.

Although gems are hard to touch, they are not unbreakable. So if you’re using them as jewelry or any other type of adornment, make sure you take care of them properly. The most basic way to do that is to keep them clean, especially when they’re inlaid in metal. You can do this by soaking them in a soap and water solution or using a very soft brush to remove hardened dust and other stains.

Another thing you need to be conscious about is storing your gems. Again, while they are all hard on the surface, some are harder and more prone to scratches as well. This means you have to segregate the hard ones from those that are harder. Opaque gems are actually porous stones which means they are softer while transparent gems are crystals of a certain mineral. Crystals are, of course, harder than stones. Thus, make sure you keep the crystals separately to avoid scratching the stones. Organic gems such as pearls and amber are even softer and more sensitive so you definitely need to put these in another container.

Another thing you’ll want to consider when storing your gems are the metals where they are inlaid. Stones and crystals are always harder than gold, silver or platinum. So whether that’s a gemstone bracelet, a pendant, chain or ring, gems can still damage metal finish so it would be good to leave enough space in between each piece of jewelry when storing them.

Gems may mean differently to people but the ways to care for them are the same. And not because they’re hard to your touch doesn’t mean they are damage-prone. You do need to take extra care of them while considering their nature.
